Hydrasun opens new Aberdeen extrusion plant
Posted: 22 November 2003
At the opening of the company's new extrusion plant in Aberdeen,
on Friday 21 November 2003, the head of the Hydrasun Group, the
leading supplier of hoses, fluid connectors and instrumentation
to the oil and gas industry, urged the industry to seize the many
opportunities which exist.
Chief executive officer Bob Drummond said the industry in general
in the UKCS had been through a fairly tough year, but there was
much to look forward to.
"Although the North Sea has seen some difficult market conditions
recently, there are also some very positive opportunities, developments
and initiatives available to all of us and it is vital that we do
not lose sight of these and make sure that we focus on them,"
he said.
Mr Drummond praised the examples set by operators such as Apache,
Talisman, Encana and Tuscan in revitalising activity in the North
Sea, and said the industry as a whole could learn from them.
"These developments and opportunities are being driven by
innovation and application of the highest level. Not only from a
technical aspect but also from the commercial, organisational and
behavioural ones," he said.
Up to 10 jobs are expected to be created at the 20,000 square foot
facility, which was officially opened by Lord Provost of the City
of Aberdeen John Reynolds.
The plant, which has been opened as part of Hydrasun¹s expansion
and business development programme, will produce specialist polyurethane
coated hydraulic and electro-hydraulic umbilical assemblies for
the oil and gas industry.
This specialist plant is the largest investment to date by the
Hydrasun Group, which has its headquarters in Aberdeen and has bases
throughout the UK and in the Netherlands. Products from the facility
will be supplied to a number of key markets including the North
Sea, the Caspian Sea region and West Africa where Hydrasun will
shortly be opening a new distribution and service support centre.
"This plant has been established to satisfy a niche market
and as part of our expansion and development both in the UK and
internationally," Drummond said.
"These new facilities have been designed in response to a
demand from companies which require short length hydraulic jumper
bundles and umbilicals within extremely fast turnaround times. Traditionally,
companies aiming to deliver shorter length umbilicals have had to
alter their production lines to cater for these types of assemblies,
creating extra cost and extending delivery times."
"Our largest market has traditionally been in the North Sea
which in addition to its size, has also been the focus of many technical
and innovative developments within the oil and gas industry. We
are now aiming to build upon this in order to satisfy a growing
international demand for our products. To keep pace with that growth
in demand we need additional facilities and have opted to operate
these from our headquarters in Aberdeen."
Provost Reynolds said: "Investment is something which is badly
needed in Aberdeen and we would like to see Aberdeen used by companies
as a base for their world operations. There is a need to put Aberdeen
on the map.
"I wish Hydrasun and all its customers all the best for the
future. I am sure things will go well."
