Landmark awarded $25m Nigerian contract

First national multi-client petroleum data bank in Africa

Landmark Graphics Corporation, a wholly owned business unit of Halliburton, has been awarded a five-year contract from the Department of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria valued at $25 million.

The contract, awarded to Landmark and its associate Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL), calls for the design, development and operation of a National Data Repository (NDR) for Nigerian exploration and production (E&P) data using Landmark's PetroBank technology, among the most advanced multi-client data management systems in the E&P industry.

Landmark and IDSL will also be responsible for commissioning and delivering the communications infrastructures that will connect NDR subscribers to the NDR facilities in Lagos and Port Harcourt. Seismic, well, other E&P information and key intellectual assets, both in digital and non-digital formats, will be securely stored for easy and rapid access from entitled subscribers to the NDR.

"With Nigeria's leading role in deepwater exploration and production and the associated volumes of technical information, the Department of Petroleum Resources has recognized the importance of protecting this valuable country asset," said Andy Lane, president, Landmark. "The Department of Petroleum Resources decision to leverage Landmark's data management solutions and operational experience is an indication of the confidence that they have in the direction that we are taking the PetroBank data hosting and management services."

"From the inception of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria, storage and retrieval of E & P data accumulated over the years has remained a major problem," said Mac Ofurhie, Director, Department of Petroleum Resources. "Nigeria chose Landmark's PetroBank technology based on its recognition as a mature, purpose-built multi-client solution that is extremely reliable. Nigeria is confident that Landmark, with its expertise and experience, will deliver a state-of-the-art solution for us as they have done world-wide in the past decade."

"Because of our proven successful deployment and operation of data banks around the world, including Brazil, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Norway and the UK, the Department of Petroleum Resources selected Landmark's PetroBank services to establish its National Data Bank operation in cooperation with IDSL," said Murray Roth, executive vice president marketing and systems, Landmark. "The installation and ongoing operations of PetroBank will provide benefits to the government and will give E&P specialists in Nigeria the opportunity to optimize their work processes in prospect generation and field development, through efficient information access."
