Aggreko power support for $70m gas project
Posted: 23 December 2003
- Aggreko supplies 3 MW power package in Bulgaria from Dubai.
- $45 million US invested in gas project to date.
- Project will fulfil 10 per cent of Bulgarian domestic gas requirement.
Aggreko plc, global leader in providing temporary power and temperature
control services, announced they are supplying a 3MW temporary power
package, a 250 kW load bank and 2 compressors for Petreco SARL,
a division of Melrose Resources plc.
The package is installed on board a pipe-laying barge during the
commissioning stage of the vessel in Turkey. Temporary power will
be used for the winches, lights, and associated equipment. The barge
is currently on location at the Galata gas fields in the Black Sea,
offshore Bulgaria. The barge will install a 23km 14-in pipeline
leading from the gas field to the onshore processing facility, which
started October 2003.
A spokesperson for Aggreko said, “Through a coordinated effort
between the Aggreko fleet teams in Dubai and Holland, all the equipment
was collected from both countries and delivered to Turkey as a complete
package in less than 4 weeks. Working with Petreco on this exciting
contract has been a great opportunity for Aggreko to be involved
in a project which is having a significant effect to the Bulgarian
economy.”
During the pipe laying procedure at the Galata field, the barge
will need to be kept flat and stationary by using a mooring system
and a constant tension winch, which will be powered by the Aggreko
generator. The 250 kW load bank connected to the generator adsorbs
the regenerative power from the winch when the mornings are loosened
to move the barge forward.
The Galata gas field was discovered in 1993 and since 1998 Petreco
has been developing options to make the development of the field
commercially viable for use in the Bulgarian regional market.
David Archer, the managing director of Petreco said, “Since
the field was discovered in 1993 Petreco have invested over $45
million US in the project, with total investment expected to be
in excess of $70 million US.”
The Galata natural gas field lies approximately 20 km offshore
to the east of the Bulgarian port of Varna and it is anticipated
to produce approximately 1.42 million standard cubic meters per
day gas, about 10% of the Bulgarian domestic requirements for natural
gas. Reserves are estimated between 1.5 and 2.0 billion cubic metres.
