Contract calls for leak testing and lube oil flushing services for new process centre in Kazakhstan

ABERDEEN, Scotland — BJ Process and Pipeline Services announced the award of a contract by Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B. V. to provide process plant testing services in Kazakhstan. BJ PPS is providing critical nitrogen/helium leak detection testing and lube oil flushing services for the company's new process facilities, Unit 2 and the Karachaganak Processing Complex (KPC). The new facilities are currently being constructed as part of the massive Karachaganak Field Development Project.

A large onshore gas-oil-condensate field, the Karachaganak Field is located in northwest Kazakhstan near the city of Aksai, north of the Caspian Sea and south of the Russian border near Orenburg. Reserves in the field are estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes (8 billion barrels) of oil and gas condensate and 1.35 trillion cubic meters (48 trillion cubic feet) of gas. The KPO consortium – consisting of BG Group, Eni, ChevronTexaco and LUKOIL - has a production sharing agreement with the Kazakh government to enhance production, which in 2001 totaled 3.75 billion cubic metres of gas and 4 million tonnes of condensate.

Unit 2 will process hydrocarbons from field wells and generate condensate and gas streams. The gas will be used as feedstock for the Karachaganak power plant that generates electricity used to power the facilities. The remaining gas will be re-injected to maintain reservoir pressure. The condensate will then pass from Unit 2 to the KPC for further treatment before being transported via pipeline to market.

The project is being serviced by BJ PPS personnel from the company’s base in Dubai, UAE. The two-year contract, which is already underway, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“As Unit 2 and the KPC are integral to the safe and efficient processing of hydrocarbons from the Karachaganak Field , it is extremely important that these facilities are thoroughly tested,” said John Adams, general manager of BJ PPS. “Drawing upon our extensive experience and patented state-of-the-art testing systems in process services, we look forward to providing KPO with safe and effective service on this, and future process and pipeline projects,” he added.
